INDIANA SCHOOL FOR THE BLIND AND VISUALLY IMPAIRED

Cane Use Policy

                                                                                                                            Policy S-03

To ensure the safety of students and others and to promote the use of the cane as a positive assistive tool for current and future independence for ISBVI students, it is the policy of the Indiana School for the Blind and Visually Impaired to require students with visual disabilities to use canes in those situations and areas as individually prescribed and recommended by ISBVI Orientation and Mobility staff following an assessment and specialized training.  All ISBVI employees, contractors, and volunteers are required to 1) encourage student cane usage for those students who are prescribed this tool for information gathering, protection, and/or identification as a student with a visual disability; and 2) as necessary, discipline students, in a progressive manner who are repeatedly and willfully in non-compliance with this policy and related administrative directives.

The ISBVI Board directs the ISBVI Superintendent to ensure staff, contractors, volunteers, and student compliance with this policy by:

1)      Developing ISBVI Administrative Directives and Procedures to implement the ISBVI

Board Policy on Cane Use to serve as a) notice to staff and students and b) clearly delineate and detail their responsibilities, and procedures to follow;

2)      Providing ISBVI staff, contractors, volunteers and students with written copies of this

policy and the ISBVI Administrative Directives and Procedures;

3)      Offering training to ISBVI staff, contractors, volunteers and students on the ISBVI Board Policy on Cane Use and accompanying ISBVI Administrative Directives and Procedures.
