Statewide Testing Requirement for ISBVI Students

Policy S-04

            To assist ISBVI students in developing independence and meaningful inclusion in society and the workforce, the Indiana School for the Blind and Visually Impaired requires by this policy that all ISBVI students shall take:  

• The Indiana Statewide Testing for Educational Progress (ISTEP) when the students are in the 3^rd, 6^th, 8^th and 10^th grades; or, as determined by the student’s Case Conference Committee,
• The Indiana Standards Tool for Alternate Reporting (ISTAR). 

In the event that the ISBVI student does not pass the 10^th grade ISTEP or Graduation

Qualifying Examination (GQE), he or she 1) must retake and pass both the language arts and mathematics portions of the test to qualify for a high school diploma; 2) may take advantage of remediation instruction provided by the Indiana School for the Blind and Visually Impaired as required of all Indiana schools by the Indiana State Board of Education; or 3) Request a waiver per state criteria.

The ISBVI Board directs the ISBVI Superintendent to ensure ISBVI staff, contractors, and volunteers, compliance with this policy by:

1)         Developing ISBVI Administrative Directives and Procedures to implement the ISBVI Board Policy on Statewide Testing Requirement for ISBVI Students which shall serve as a) notice to staff and b) clearly delineate and detail their responsibilities, expectations, and procedures to follow;

2)         Providing staff written notice and documenting their awareness and receipt of these documents by obtaining their signatures; and

3)         Affording initial and periodic on-going training to staff on the ISBVI Board Policy on Statewide Testing Requirement for ISBVI Students and accompanying ISBVI Administrative Directives and Procedures.
