Student Use of Motor Scooters while on the ISBVI Campus

Policy 0-44

           Students are expected to ensure the health, safety and well fare of self and other individuals while utilizing motor scooters and/or comparable transportation while on the campus of the Indiana School for the Blind and Visually Impaired.  Furthermore, the following requirements must be met:

• Possess a valid Indiana Drivers License or provide documentation from a licensed or certified professional indicating the operator meets the  visual licensing requirements for a Driver’s License:

A. Reading Without Glasses

Both eyes: 20/20 – 20/40: *No Restrictions

One eye: 20/20 – 20/40

Other eye: 20/50 – Blind:  *B Restriction

B. Reading With Glasses

One eye: 20/20 – 20/40

Other eye: 20/50 – Blind: *AB Restriction

One eye: 20/50

Other Eye: 20/50: *A Restriction

One eye: 20/50

Other eye: 20/70 – Blind: *ABC Restriction

One eye: 20/70

Other eye: 20/70 *ABC Restriction

C. Visual Field requirements

One eye: 55 degrees – 85 degrees

Other eye: 55 degrees – 85 degrees: *No Restriction

One eye: 55 degrees – 85 degrees + nasal in same eye

Other eye: NR= no reading: *B Restriction

A: glasses or contact lenses required

B: outside mirrors required

C: daylight driving only

Note: If glasses or contacts are required for acuity, an “A” restriction will be required.  A

minimum reading of 90 degree field is required for an Indiana operator permit.

AND:

• If under 18 years of age provide parental or guardian permission in writing to the education office, granting permission for the student to commute via motor scooter or comparable vehicle;
• If under 18 years of age a helmet must be worn at all times while operating the vehicle;
• Obey all of Indiana’s traffic laws and regulations;
• Will not transport other students on the vehicle or allow other individuals to use the vehicle;
• Will only utilize public roadways;
• Will only use vehicle to and from school and will not use the vehicle during the school day;
• Will park the vehicle in the designated parking area;
• Will assume all liability for vehicle, including damage, loss, theft to vehicle and other items and issues associated with a vehicle altercation;
• Obey all ISBVI school rules as they relate to signing in and out of living spaces, restrictions, lights out and return to campus times;
• Will possess a valid ISBVI unrestricted Green Orientation and Mobility Pass.
